Module 3: Climate Adaptive Strategies

3. Utilize Integrated Pest Management

As seasons shift and temperature and precipitation increase, pest, pathogen, and weed pressures can increase. Incorporating solutions that make the least environmental impact will protect production while reducing resistance build up in pests. Increase scouting for early detection, utilize integrated pest management, and diversify varieties and species to better protect crops and livestock from pests, pathogens, and weeds.

Increase Scouting for Early Detection

  • Increase surveillance as conditions become more favorable

  • Conduct regular scouting

  • Stay aware of new threats

  • Be aware of life cycles and how pests spread

Increase scouting for early detection of pests and diseases - prevent problems before they start

Diversify crops and livestock to species with resistance to pests and pathogens

Implement integrated Pest Management Strategies

  • Utilize IPM through prevention, avoidance, monitoring, and suppression

  • Use cultural and biological controls whenever possible

  • Practice sanitary farming practices to reduce spread

  • Prevent invasive species following a crop disturbance

  • Correctly use appropriate pesticides when necessary

Diversify Varieties and Species

  • Use crop varieties and livestock lineage with pest resistance
